Pseudomonas is a bacteria that is typically found in trach tubes. It is not usually a problem and does not typically infect healthy people. But if a kid like Brendan is compromised by another illness, the pseudomonas likes to join the party and can cause a serious infection in the lungs.
Brendan’s trach cultures revealed a pseudomonas infection and so he is being switched to a different antibiotic to knock it out.
He is slowly making progress on his oxygen weaning and made it down to 30%. Regular atmosphere at sea-level is about 21% oxygen so he has more improving to do. We are hopeful that he can come home on Monday.
He is feeling more like himself. He is going crazy that he is confined by short tubes and wires and really wants to roam. We are trying to keep him busy.
We are lucky that visitor restrictions are not in place so Trevor is able to come to the room when Bill and I trade shifts. Trevor made Brendan an artwork on the nurses’ dry erase board.
Brendan has a distinct disadvantage in games of hide and seek.
They are fascinated with this closet.
We have put almost 100 miles a day on our vehicles going back and forth to the hospital and Trevor has done every mile. While Bill stayed with Brendan yesterday, I took Trevor to his very first movie. We went to see “Minions” at the local cheap theater. Trevor lasted about 45 minutes and then wanted to leave. It was just too loud for him and the movie was not that good.
(sorry, really bad cell phone pic)
I have to rant for a moment. All the hospital stuff and illness and everything aside, one thing is really getting on my nerves. With rare exception, every single new person every day that enters Brendan’s room says, “ooh, where does the red hair come from?” It comes from magic red hair land. I don’t know. A leprechaun visited me in the hospital and waved his magic wand. I told a nurse yesterday, “I don’t know” and she says, “why, is he the mailman’s kid?” *wink* *wink* REALLY??! When the uncomfortable moment had almost passed, an RT walked in and said, “Where’s that red hair from?!” and they had a good laugh.
I know they are trying to make small talk or break the ice. It is annoying.
I don’t reply with, “Where did your freakishly large nose come from?”
Anyway. It is easy to feel more offended by things when you are exhausted. I hope he comes home soon.
” A leprechaun visited me in the hospital and waved his magic wand. ”
😉 😉 🙂
That may be closer to the truth than you think . . . . . My Mother’s family was predominantly English, so there may be a bit of, ” Merry Old Ireland” , there.
I can’t say for sure, by the time I came along all of their hair was grey.
I’m so glad to hear Brendan is improving enough to be likely going home Monday. It’s also good that Trevor could be in the hospital to make the changing of the guard easier.
It’s so nice to see that cute Brendan smile, even with everything he’s been going through. 🙂 I hope you’re all going to get some rest soon.
Love and big hugs,
Gramma xoxoxoxo
Good morning from the East Coast!!! It is Monday and we are hoping that Brendan will be packing up and you soon will be driving home!!! Loved the boys in the closet picture!!! And the hide-and-seek…..too cute!! Tiffanie and Bill, just cannot imagine how stressful these past few weeks have been…truly hope you will be all under one roof and you can gain some much needed rest!! Sending love, hugs and many prayers!!! 🙂
Glad B is on the mend and hopefully on his way home today.
We get a lot of questions of where K’s blond comes from too. I just want to look at people and ask “don’t you understand how simple genetics actually work?”. Anyway, most of the small talk cliche questions and comments like this are annoying, and definitely more so when you are exhausted and ready to be out of there!
So glad Brendan is improving. My prayer is that he will be home Monday as well. Poor little guy has been though so much. There is no excuse to being rude and stupid too – Brendan’s hair is as precious as he is…..It is a shame that people don’t say it to themselves first before it comes flying out of their mouths.
Let’s have some compassion for the season. I agree with you ignorant remarks are harder to take when you are tired and concerned for your son’s health.
Much love – now I spouted and I feel better. Thank you for the update I have been hoping to hear how he was doing…Love va
