Week 22 – Day 7

It was a very stressful day today.. leading to another day of nail biting tomorrow. Brendan just could not get comfortable today, no matter what they gave him and he struggled to maintain his numbers. There were lots of people in and out of his room, and in the ICU that is never a good sign. Right now, he is resting, but still sitting with saturations in the low 60’s.
He went for a CT today and the preliminary reading from the doctors indicates that there are two tiny collateral veins, but they are too small to coil during a cath and insignificant when it comes to the blood flow, so that is not causing his trouble.
The CT did show bad lungs and that is what it boils down to. His left upper lung was totally collapsing again today, even on pressure support. They ordered a chest ultrasound to get a better idea of how much fluid was still surrrounding the lung and what might be involved to drain it off. It may be as simple as drawing it out with a needle, but the fluid may be in lots of small isolated pockets which would complicate the issue.
His tracheotomy is at noon and then we have been warned that the first few days after surgery will be very difficult as it heals in place. Once it gets sealed in place, it will be easier to provide appropriate pressure to his lungs to support him properly. I can only hope that this procedure will finally be the turning point to get on the road to recovery.

I didn’t take many pictures of Brendan today, just one to share.

Someone must have replaced Trevor’s rice cereal flakes with Folger’s Crystals. He was ultra awake-baby today and refused to nap. He would fall asleep with Gramma rocking him and as soon as she went to set him down, he would pop awake.

Just when you think that baby is asleep…

… Haha! Only acting!

Wanting very much for this to be your turning point and the break you have been waiting for. 6. With the time difference, Brendan, you should, now, be just starting this latest “adventure”. So many know, so many care, so many love, so many, at this moment have you in their thoughts and prayers, hoping that this will be the answer, and that this part of your journey will finally begin to fade behind you, and the joys of living and growing will replace the struggles you have endured.
One picture today, and I’m encouraged to see “Nemo” with you. “He” has “been there and done that”, so you travel in good company. 🙂 🙂

  7. Hi, I don’t know if this will make any difference to you, but I recently found an old friend and was talking to her on FB and she was telling me about her Grandson who will be 1 yrs old on Apr. 4. When he was born he weighed 2.7lbs. He had to have heartsurgery also. I’m sure it was a totally different procedure then what Brendan has been through, but like she said he’s been through more then most adults have and he now weighs 20+lbs and is very healthy. That’s where Brendan’s going to be soon. He is such a little fighter. We read on here everyday, and have been thinking of you all, all day. And as usual lots of prayers going everyone’s way. By the way, Trevor is so darn cute, I love his pictures and your little quotes.
Stay positive, Love Michelle and Bobby

  8. Brendan, Mom and Dad. You are in my prayers. Someday this will all behind you and you will all wonder how you made it. I just know that God has great plans for you Brendan. You are so loved and needed. I pray that today is the beginning of your journey to getting home to be with your mommy, daddy and brother. 🙂

  9. Both your little bros are soo adorable. I just love Trevor’s cheeks and Brendan has such a beautiful smile. God chose you for a reason Tiffany cuz he knew Brendan was going to need a strong mother and he made the right choice. I continue to pray for his recovery and I know he will soon be home. My prayers are also with Bill’s father I hope he gets better soon. Your Friend Erma
