Today was a big day for both girls! Kayla has been working on the special memorial for her friend Alex. His sister has been working on it too, to create some cool pictures for the library windows and get out the word for the special Lego contest. Students at the middle school could build something out of Legos that was in the spirit of the How to Train Your Dragon book series. The special scholarship fund at the school sponsored some nice prizes.
What made today special? Today was the judging for the Lego entries. Alex’s mom thought it would be good for the girls to NOT be judges, to avoid any issues with kids at school. Instead, Alex’s little brother and grandfather acted as judges, along with the superintendent and a couple of teachers. As a special nod to our family, Ashley was also asked to be a judge! She was so excited to get released from school a little early, walked over to the middle school, and allowed to be part of this! The bigger girls acted as the accounting firm, tabulating the points and determining the winners. Kevin and I zipped over after work to see the final display put together, help out, and take pictures. Tomorrow at school, Kayla and Emma will be part of the big annoucement for the winners and the book donation (so that students know that the books will soon be available for check-out).
Here are a couple of pictures. The winning Lego entry is in the bottom left of the display – 3 boys from Alex’s scout troup made a Lego replica Viking village, with dragons and everything! It was very cool and so true to the story! The picture of the top shelf has Kayla’s dragon Furious (the enemy dragon in the book series), the book collection, and then the replica Toothless and Hiccup that Alex built.
Very touching exhibit and a wonderful thing for your family to do in Alex’s memory.
Kayla, again Gramma would like to tell you how proud I am of you and how you have dealt with such a very sad time in your life. You have honored your friend in such a wonderful way. Thank you for being such a special girl.
Ashley, you got to be a judge!! What an honor! I think you did a wonderful job helping to choose the best entry. You are also a very special girl with a very caring heart, and Gramma is very proud of you, too.
Tomorrow will be a very memorable day that will provide children with books to read that Alex loved so much, and the library will have them for years to come, thanks to your family. What a very nice idea.
Love to all of you, Gramma
I am so impressed! Great job Kayla, the pictures are awesome! Way to go, Judge Ashley!
I am so glad that I can share in this special time with you through this blog.
Wow! Great work, Kayla! I’m so proud of you and the way that you’ve turned this difficult loss into a loving and lasting tribute to Alex.
Ashley, looks like you selected the right winner! Good job!
Kayla, Ashley, What can I add to all the praise you have received here, for your loving, caring, selfless act of friendship.
Yes, I think this should cover it, 😉 Brilliant!
