January 27th: BRRRRRRR!!!

Here we are again, another “polar vortex”. Weather guys are having a field day coming up with catchy names to give the unusually cold weather. The girls and I are out of school today, and most likely will be tomorrow. This is what the hourly forecast says for 7AM tomorrow morning.

temps

That “feels like” column would be the wind chill. Schools across the county are closed, because kids can’t be waiting for a bus or trying to walk to school in the dangerous levels of cold. The diesel fuel in the buses also has a bad habit of turning to gel in these low temps, making the buses shut down or not start. Right now, the wind chills are -25 degrees. We will be out of school tomorrow for sure, making it 4 days used for emergency days. The schools are all looking at canceling holidays and teacher inservice days as a way to make up these missed days and no extend the school year. We’ll see what happens- winter isn’t over yet, and we also have way more snow this year than last year!

This worked out pretty good for Kayla. She had her weekend church retreat and came home yesterday. She was exhausted! Too much fun, to much staying up late and getting up early. She had a great time! Even the 3+ hour car ride each way wasn’t bad. She rode with the boys and talked Minecraft and Pokemon the whole way. Boys are not as annoying to her as they used to be. Girls her age are all into fashion and boys, things that still do not interest Kayla. Having no school today means catching up on needed sleep. It is 9:30AM, and she is still not downstairs. I think she is sort of awake, but not ready to greet the world.

Ashley slept until 8:30 or so and just finished breakfast. We will spend the day practicing instruments, watching a movie, playing games, and just staying warm!

  1. ” We will spend the day practicing instruments, watching a movie, playing games, and just staying warm!” 🙂 🙂
Sounds like a plan to me. I have some ship modeling to do, it’s too cold in the basement to do anything with the modules and trains, and the ship model can be worked on at the table, in the dining area.
    -25 degrees wind chill,…..Up side?……
The new furnace is keeping the house, ( not so much the basement )
    right where I set the thermostat for….*comfortable, but economical*…… 😉 🙂
Maybe it’s time to start using the phrase “Climate Extremes” …. instead of “Global Warming” 😉 😮 😉

  2. I think “BRRRRRRR!!!” just about sums it up! I’ve had enough cold and snow for the rest of the winter.
I’m glad Kayla had a good time, and came home in one piece and before it got ridiculously cold, just seriously cold! 🙂
Maybe there will be school in the morning!
Lots of love and warm hugs,
    Gramma xxxx

  3. I always read and plan to comment and then forget to come back and actually do it. I can’t really wrap my mind around how cold that is and how tough it is to deal with the snow in those temperatures, especially when we are running around outside without coats.
Where’s the birthday party post? I was hoping to see some pictures!

  4. Good afternoon from the snowy, cold East Coast!! We too have had enough winter, albeit this last snow was exceptionally beautiful!!! Uncle Rich and I send our love, hugs and kisses to all of you!! XOXOXOXO. We really enjoyed seeing you over the longer than expected weekend!! Tell Kayla and Ashley, Thank You for our concert!!! The Komacs are a beautiful and talented family!!! Love you all!!! (We managed to catch a computer virus at our last hotel and are happy to have my “clean” computer back. We can finally check in again!!) Stay warm!! Hugs and love!!! 🙂
