Year 4 – Week 37 – Day 7

I can’t let Week 37 get by without a single post!

We have had a tough week. The strong antibiotic that Brendan has been taking to eliminate the MRSA infection has wreaked havoc on his little digestive system. Plus, having a little cold virus at the same time did not help. We had to start him on a special probiotic and we are running his food pump really slow and giving him oxygen.

I won’t lie and say that MRSA doesn’t scare me. We just heard today that Brendan’s night nurse was admitted to the hospital because of this same bug. For her, a small skin bump turned in to a boil, then a deep abscess and it was not fully responding to antibiotics. Now she is spiking high fevers and needs to have the wound addressed surgically and has IV antibiotics running. I am hoping she gets relief soon and can get rid of this infection. We are all diligently doing our nasal swabs and meds for both boys.
I don’t want this to push back his decannulation procedure, but I also don’t want there to be great risk to his health if he still is carrying this.

We went ahead with our weekend plans today to escape to fresher air and cooler temperatures. We are currently at a KOA campground in northern AZ and plan to have some simple adventures with temperatures maxing out in the high 70’s. The campground has some nice amenities, we already took the boys on a hay ride tour of the grounds.

The boys played with “Bubble Ray Guns” while we set up.

Hopefully a little R&R is all we need. Our thoughts are with Mary Alyn, and we hope for a quick recovery.

  1. I hope you totally enjoy your much needed time away and have a great time! I hope both boys get well and stay well throughout Brendan’s procedures. So exciting!
So sorry to hear that Mary Alyn is in the hospital, and wish her a speedy recovery.
    Enjoy your cool break!

  2. Yay to mountain adventures in cooler temps, and to the joy of “Bubble Ray Guns”! Thank you for your thoughtful words and concern. I certainly could not have addressed my initial small “mosquito bite bump” any faster or more aggressively than I did, and as with you and the boys, I have maintained a strict medication schedule. At this point, it is what it is. Boo.

Thanks for the blog update and pics of your little adventurers!
    ♡ I do adore them. ♡

  3. Good morning from the Lake House!! Good grief, you all have had your hands full!!!! Looking at your pictures, one would never know the difficulties you all have been going through! 🙁 hoping that Mary Alyn heals quickly and the boys are MRSA free!! It is truly a tough organism to wrecken with!! Sending prayers, hugs and love!!!! Enjoy the cooler, fresh air!!! Heal!!!! Hugs!! 🙂

  4. 🙂 🙂 😉 Trevor “Solo” , and Brendan “Skywalker” …….Just another “Phase – r” ?

Mary Alyn, You have a whole other family thinking of you and hoping for a quick and complete recovery.

  5. Thanks everyone. Your well wishes are warmly received and much appreciated. The surgeon aid the I&D was less invasive than anticipated, and commended my wound care management and med schedule (the volume and variety of antibiotics surprised him) and said all the urgent care follow ups for wound care made his job easy. I told him that I was trying to avoid a hospital stay, but he said that I really did the right thing following my gut, because “MRSA is sneaky and [mine] was obviously not playing nice”.

Looks like another couple days in isolation on IV Vancomycin. I’ve had a couple veins blow, which really sucks. And the nurse this morning woke me at 0630 have me 600mg Ibuprofen, checked my vitals, then repacked my wound (just shoveled it in with a long q-tip) without Lidocaine. Oh my gosh, I was corroborate my breathing, but started silently crying. When she noticed, she said, “Are you? Crying? Do you want me to stop?” And I said, “Don’t stop. Just finish, you’re almost done. I just want it done.” Then I crawled into bed and cried. It was a pitiful cry, too. But as I lay there I realized that if it were between me and what started as my teeny mosquito bite boil and what the boys’ went through, I’d rather be the one in the hospital than either of them… ever.

I love those fun-loving, naughty, rascals. And I can’t wait to meet Brendan without a trach! That’ll be an amazing day, an amazing future! See y’all soon. (But not Monday or Tuesday night, sorry. I’m still on isolation. Doctor’s Orders!)
