Year 4 – Week 38 – Day 2

On the way home today, we broke up the driving with a stop at a special location. This spot is called The Naco Formation. This gray outcropping is shale/limestone deposited here about 300 million years ago when the area was under sea. It is a giant bed of fossils of sea life including brachiopods, bryozoans, and crinoids.

It is a bit of a steep slope up to the edge. The rock up there is very delicate and dusty.

The boys could not be stopped!
438bt04

It is very easy to chip in to the rocks. Almost every chunk had evidence of fossils.

Pretty cool stuff for in a forest surrounded by desert

Brendan kept picking up pieces of rock and holding them up to say, “I found something!!” He was probably right in this case!

The nearby Northern Arizona University has been bringing paleontology students here to collect for more than 30 years. There is that much material here! It is legal to collect from here as well, so we brought home a couple of little pieces.

The hill was so loose and slippery, I told Trevor to sit and crab walk down. He just slid.

More fossils

The temperature was increasing with the afternoon, but the area was so pretty

I told them, “Shovel twin powers, activate!!”
438bt12

“Charge!”

We are back home and some tired boys are in bed! Just over two weeks to go for Brendan!

  1. What an interesting place to visit! I learn so many new things when your family goes on trips away from home. 🙂 Your boys are getting such a great education…and they think they’re just having fun! 😉
I’m glad you made it home safe and sound, and I hope you left all of the bacteria far far away in another place, so now you will all be well for a long time.
Now you need to rest up from your mini-vacation! Brendan’s countdown is getting shorter. So exciting!
I love what Trevor told you about your hair needing to be cut! He’s so funny, and so smart to put things together and come out with what he says!!
Lots of love and hugs, I miss you all,
    Gramma xoxoxo

  2. 😉 😉 I think I would like to go there some day………..I wouldn’t be the “oldest fossil” there. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Looks like both of the boys had a good time, doing the “Indiana Jones” bit, with their “shovel twin powers”. 😉 🙂

  3. Good afternoon from the east Coast!! What fun at the Naco Formation!! Will add that to our AZ list!! We are a greeing with Gramma…may you have left all those pesky micro-organisms in the desert!!! That goes for the cold germs too!! Stay healthy boys for Brendan’s “big” day!! Prayers, hugs and love!!! 🙂
