Year 4 – Week 43 – Day 2

It is challenging to post about this week, it has felt like a month and I am not sure I remember it all.

Initially, Brendan seemed to be getting better. The bumps were going away. We made some plans for the week. Monday night, Trevor woke up in the middle of the night with that signature high pitched barking cough. I couldn’t believe that we needed a virus on top of everything else. He had a fever the next day but was doing alright and slept through with no coughing spells on Tuesday. I was ready with the mist pump on standby but he didn’t need it.

We went ahead with our plan for Wednesday night. It was the time of year for the Perseid Meteor shower. The peak of the shower coincided with the new moon so it should have made for a great view.
We dragged the trailer out to about a hour outside of town, hoping to get some dark skies. In the middle of the night, Phoenix still looked like the sun rising in the south, and the weather wasn’t cooperative.
It was still a nice spot.

The boys love to get away and explore.

This flat landing with the old corral must be a favorite stopping point for hunters. We found three bear paws/feet scattered around.
44202

It was still awfully hot, and there were so many bugs. The boys didn’t tolerate being outside as much as usual.
442bt02

442bt03

They were catching beetles on their shovel. But the tiny gnats and the big wasps were too much, they wanted to go in.

442bt04

He just wanted to dig.
442t01

There was a pretty sunset
44204

I tried for a few hours to catch some meteors in photos. Even at its peak, there was a long wait between meteors. It was very cool to see, but I never had my camera aimed in the right place. Even so, Bill and I got to spend a few quiet hours together doing something new.

We all went to bed and everything was good. Trevor was doing fine. Then the virus caught up to Brendan. Bill and I had to take shifts staying up with him and we went home first thing in the morning. He seemed to improve during the day and we did breathing treatments and mist pump for him. Thursday night was the worst though, and I had several moments where I debated taking him to the emergency room. He already had an appointment scheduled with his pulmonologist Friday, so we wanted to get him through.

The appointment was frustrating. We did get steroids and refills on breathing treatments. But seeing him so sick as a follow up to his procedures makes her feel like being extra conservative. She started talking about leaving the trach in place until next summer when he was getting ready for heart surgery. She will defer to the cardiologists and the ENT about what they want to do. I won’t know until the middle of next week what the other doctors think should be the next step.

Brendan had to go for a chest xray too. While we waited, he pulled the bag dispenser off of the diaper bag and made it into a spaceship for his Lego guys.

Saturday morning, since Brendan was stable, we ran out to get supplies for a new project. Going to IKEA on a Saturday was a big mistake! Wow is that place crowded! But look what you can buy!

It has taken me 48 minutes to write these last few sentences now that the boys are awake.
Hopefully Brendan will shake this cold away. His MRSA bumps are gone, but I am watching Trevor carefully because he has some tiny pimples. It is terrible now that I will get paranoid about every bump and heat rash. I have a bump in my hairline that could be nothing but I am on guard for that too.

I am really hoping things turn around for Brendan. We all need rest.

Year 4 – Week 42 – Day 1

Brendan is on the Bactrim.
44102

That sweet face, with rapidly spreading and growing bumps. Poor thing.
441b12

It is upsetting and a bit frightening. Tonight’s bath featured a 1/4 cup of bleach added to the water. More nasal swabs and ointments and lots of bleaching are added to the routine.
441b13

This isn’t how we wanted to celebrate Bill’s birthday! We did make a nice filet mignon dinner and had birthday cake tonight. Happy Birthday to an amazing Daddy and wonderful husband. There is no way to express how much he is appreciated.

I told Trevor he could have one more bite of cake!

Year 4 – Week 41 – Day 7

The emotional roller coaster hit some big hills and drops today.
Brendan is still in need of frequent suctioning, he isn’t sleeping well, he can’t wear his cap, and he had some stinky ugly drainage from his trach site today.
After a week’s worth of phone tag with various doctors, we get a phone call today saying that they can schedule his next surgery for August 13TH!! NOOOO!! We want that to be true, but he isn’t ready.
I was on my way to see the pediatrician this afternoon when I finally get a call back about Brendan’s symptoms from his other doctors. It turns out that his cultures done during his procedure on the 28th came back positive for Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter baumannii, “Two common lung bugs” in the words of his ENT.
I had to drive 45 miles round trip to the only pharmacy in the Phoenix metro area that had the right antibiotic in stock that was in the right form to be put in his tube. I would have picked up a case of energy drinks and drove all night to L.A. if necessary to get it right away. I am glad to get some medicine that will help him improve.
We start the antibiotic tonight and his ENT and pulmonologist both feel a minimum of two weeks is necessary before surgery should be considered.
So the scheduler penciled us in for the next available opening in the OR. SEPTEMBER 21!! It hurts to miss the early window of opportunity but we have to do what is safe for Brendan.
The other thing we have to watch is 4 tiny bumps on his right eyelid. After our battle with MRSA, I am super paranoid about pimples on his face. His pediatrician gave us a script for Bactrim again. If the pimples get worse even while taking the other antibiotic, he will have to take both. NO MORE MRSA!!!

It is especially hard to deal with Brendan’s symptoms when he does not feel like taking it easy. The boys are restless. Today, Trevor begged me to take them to the Space Museum. Since it is the first week of school for a lot of kids out here, the place was EMPTY!

This is the “Hug a Planet” wall. It is an animated projection that reacts to your shadows and motion. You can bop the planets all around and if you can catch one, it will give you little factoid bubbles about the planet. Really cool!

The rotunda filled with big murals and big building blocks is Trevor’s favorite place to go.

Trevor says this is a fire station

441bt06

Cuties!
441bt07

They had to be wearing their space shirts to go to the space museum!
441bt08

This is a vortex display, like a dust devil.
441bt09

441bt10

I wish I would have recorded Trevor’s conversations with mission control while he pushed buttons. He is hilarious.
441bt11

I am so happy that they cooperated for these photos!

They put us in a room with a rocket at the doctor’s office too.

Brendan needs to get better so he can get his procedures done. He has been through enough!!!
