What a weekend!

More to come on Ashley’s fun…this is just Kayla for now. Let me get the timeline for this story….

Flash back to 4 months ago…Kayla went to her 8th grade graduation dance with a lot of friends. By the end of the evening, she said that the friends started “pairing off” into little couples, and she was left with one girl friend and one guy friend. That guy was Logan, who she spent a while talking to that night. They got along great.

Now, this past Sunday (one week ago). Our phone rings. Kevin picks it up, and a nervous young man asks if Kayla is available. A few moments later, she is bouncing back into the room to see if she can go to the Grant High School Homecoming dance on Saturday with Logan.  She was SO excited, and we don’t see that in Kayla all that often. So we said yes.

Monday – Kayla and I go shopping right after school because we don’t have or could find a dress for her that would work. We shopped the mall and the usual places (JC Penney’s, Macy’s, Carson’s, even Kohls!) with no luck. Kayla is not quite a juniors fit in clothes, but she is almost too big (and developed) for girl’s sizes. We thought we might head toward Salvation Army, in case a gently used one could be found. That’s when we popped into the Mundelein Burlington Coat Factory. Success! She found a dress she loved, in a girl’s size 16, and it cost $18!!!!!! Sheds glitter everywhere, but that’s fine for a dress that she needs for maybe one night.

Friday – Kayla and I head shoe shopping right after school. We go into Famous Footwear and find a few things but they are uncomfortable. So we look on the clearance rack. And find a pair of pewter/silver shoes with crystal accents that are heels but were comfortable to walk around in. Final cost $26!!!!

Toss in the jewelry from Erin’s wedding and my silver bag from Erin’s wedding, and the complete look cost less than $50. Lucky!!!

She chatted almost every day with Logan. There was a form that needed to be signed by us, Kayla’s principal, and the Grant principal because she was a guest and not a student. Logan’s dad did the driving. He invited her to dinner too!

Here she is all ready to go!

They had dinner at Dockers, a little place Kevin and I used to go to when we were dating. They went to the dance, met up with all kinds of friends, and had a great time. They left the dance a little early and met some more friends at a local ice cream shop that stays open late. She got home around 11PM, exhausted and excited and happy.

What makes us the happiest is that no matter what happens in her future, she will always remember her first official date for her first official high school dance as a happy event.

Of course, I told her she can’t have a boyfriend until she is 16, and she agreed completely! =)
