Week 3 – Day 6 – Part 2

I am really late getting these pictures up from last night. Since the nurses wanted to do Trevor’s car seat test, Mom and I made a second trip to the hospital to take the seat in. We got there in time for his 9PM feeding time.

The nurse earlier in the day offered me the little raisin nub from the umbilical cord that had fallen off. I find that a little disturbing to keep dried up skin so I threw it away. The nurse at night told us that it had fallen off on her shift the night before and it had gone in to his poopy diaper. She had fished it out and washed it so that we could keep it. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that her efforts were all wasted!

Since that nub was off, the nurse did offer to help us give Trevor a bubble bath. I did not realize that this meant that she was going to give him the bath and not even let me in to even get a good look at him. I had to be pretty pushy to just get pictures. She had her “magic method” to keep the baby from crying in the tub. She would get all up in his face and sing “diddle diddle diddle” right in his ear. It creeped me out. A lot.

But he actually did really well in the bath, I just think he is nice a mellow and don’t give a lot of credit to her “method”.

Week 3 – Day 6 – Part 1

What a wild a wooly day!! I have so many pictures to share, I am going to break them up in to two posts.

Bill went out on a big long motorcycle ride this morning at 5am. Once he downloads his pictures, I will have to post one. Mom and I did the hospital rounds today and it was action packed.

We started out seeing Brendan this morning. When we arrived, they were fussing about how his surgery incision was looking a little moist and being pulled by the tape on his ostomy bag. They decided they would take the bag off and clean the whole area and then decide what to do. Since he was very sensitive about being touched in that area, they gave him some morphine. Then because he was doped up, they decided to redress all of his lines. So everything got all cleaned and taped fresh and the incision is looking healthy and won’t be bothered by the tape now. They had to weigh him, so while they had him lifted up, they changed all of his bedding and gave him a super fuzzy soft blanket to lie on. He got the works package!

He also had a lot of company in his room – we saw several of his doctors and special nurses. He is scheduled to have his first heart surgery tomorrow afternoon – BUT, it is because they left him on the schedule from last week. They are still not certain that they will be doing it tomorrow. The doctors all have slightly different opinions about what is the best route to take. He needs the heart surgery in order to have the circulation to help his gut heal, but there are risks from doing the surgery with the gut issues still unhealed. In the morning, the doctors will put their heads together and make up their mind. So we will head back to the hospital first thing in the morning and wait for the meeting to be over so that we will know. Tomorrow could be crazy!

Trevor is doing great and just continuing to be adorable. The nurses bought a little set of outfits for the boys and had dressed Trevor in cute little clothes and socks. They took his picture and made the cutest little scrapbook page that is a card to take to his brother to hang up. The nurses asked for us to bring in his carseat for his seat test. He has to be able to sit in his carseat for an hour and a half and not have his heart rate or respiration stats drop.
He is really eating well now, taking 70-85cc in each feeding. I still try to breastfeed him and he is getting better, but he just is too little yet to really get it. He is gaining weight like he should, he is up to 5lbs, 4.8oz! When they weighed Brendan today, he was 5lbs, 0.2oz. But with the way Trevor is eating, he is going to grow way faster than his brother for a while.

Lots and lots of Pictures!!

Brendan’s cousins drew him pictures to hang in his room to make it more personal and to wish him well. I absolutely love the drawings, they make me smile a lot. Thank you girls!!!
Ashley (7yr old) drew him a dragon because it stands for strength:

Kayla (10yr old) drew him a unicorn because it will bring him luck:

Brendan all snuggled in and cozy

Brendan doesn’t take up much room in his incubator bed. Coincidentally, this particular bed is called a giraffe by the nurses because of its shape. And now he has a giraffe blanket

Mom is holding a pretending-to-be-sleeping Trevor. He pretends to burp too so he can get back to eating faster.

The cousins did some drawings for Trevor too!

Kayla drew a dragon that looks a little sneaky! Trouble like Trevor!

Ashley drew an awesome picture of our family. She even remembered the dog that only has 3 legs. I wish we had a mini unicorn, that is not part of our family, but that is good luck for Trevor too.

Tucked in for bed!

I will have to update with part 2 in the morning, I am falling asleep fast! Part 2 pictures will be Trevor’s first bubble bath!

Week 3 – Day 5 – Meeting “Gramma”!

I picked up my mom from the airport today and we went straight over to the hospital to get there in time for Trevor’s awake time. Trevor’s feeding tube is gone!! That is one more huge step for him, that means he is eating all on his own. He was all lazy and sleepy with me and did not want to take to breastfeeding at all today, but he did eat. We have some working to do with that boy. The good thing is, Mom got to feed him some of his bottle and spend time with him.

We had a quick lunch in the hospital cafeteria and then went over to see Brendan. He is looking better and his numbers are all good today. The surgeon came buy for a checkup and, in the nurse’s words, was “ecstatic” about how good the ileostomy opening was healing. The bag was connected and he is passing waste well. His tummy measurement went down 2cm and they were very happy with that. We are still hearing rumblings about surgery Monday, but the nurse wasn’t sure. We’ll try to get to Brendan’s hospital earlier tomorrow to catch the doctors on their rounds. They’ve weaned down more on the ventilator again but he is still “riding the vent” for now, letting the machine initiate his breaths.

Pictures!
