Week 27 – Day 7

Brendan looked like he was feeling even better today. He only needed additional medication overnight when they gave him his “bath” and tried to move him to the scale for a weight. (His weight was up to 14lbs 10oz!) The doctors have changed the orders so that the day shift crew can do the bath and weight so they don’t have to disturb him in the night time when he really prefers to sleep.
I went early this morning to see him, and then late in the afternoon I took Aunt Beth for a quick visit.

He gave Beth lots of smiles, and would have been talking up a storm if he could make noise.

Brendan did a 6hr sprint on the vent today and did a great job. He was pretty tired when they put him back on NAVA and they had to turn up his oxygen a bit to help him rest. They also upped his food from 33ml/hr to 35ml/hr (that’s just under 2oz more formula per day more). The more he can grow, the better and stronger he will get with his independent breathing. It is amazing that he is 3lbs behind Trevor. He has kept up well all things considered!

Trevor had a fun time helping Daddy work this morning while I was with Brendan. When I got home, he had a big bowl of oatmeal and his pear juice. He loved the oatmeal, sitting in his big boy high chair. Then he didn’t want his next milk bottle, I think he was telling us he would rather have the sweet pear! He did finally eat, we will just have to get it in to a routine.

This is after his last bottle in the evening, a bit of a food coma going on!

These pajamas from Gramma are not as big on him as I expected! They definitely have LOTS of room to grow.

He likes the loose stretchy pajama pants so much, he was trying to stretch them up to his mouth to chew on them!

Week 27 – Day 6

Sure enough, no antibiotics and no morning challenges for Brendan. He was pretty comfortable. I got there around 6:30a and held him until almost 11:00a. He wasn’t smiley, but he seemed relaxed.

Brendan seems to have discovered his fingers, not that they haven’t been working for him all this time for tube pulling. They must just have a mind of their own!

No PRNs today, just a little tylenol in the afternoon so they could change the dressing on his PICC line. He was deeply asleep when I put him back in to bed. He did a five hour sprint on the vent today! At the end, he was showing signs of being tired and working a little harder to breathe but it is still progress. It is a slow training getting his muscles conditioned to breathe on his own again.

Trevor gets more and more active every day. He is seriously teething now, I just expect little teeth to pop through any time. He has on his nice summery shorts that Gramma bought him, I love the plaid cement truck.

Week 27 – Day 5

I managed to get to the hospital by 5:30am today, and Brendan was awake. He shot me a couple of smiles as the nurse did his assessment. It did not take long for whatever his morning issue is to start to bother him yet again. He got flushed red and very sweaty and his heart rate started to climb. Fortunately I was able to hold him and comfort him and he did not require sedation. My being there with him coupled with his increase in Klonadine allowed him to recover from the trouble within about an hour.
I continued to hold him most of the morning and finally got him settled in to bed to start his vent sprints.
The top thought on this morning mess is still antibiotics causing intestinal distress. He has been on the antibiotics 19 days now. The last of the cultures were due back today and the antibiotics were being discontinued. Tomorrow morning will be a good indication of whether or not it makes a difference.

When his head gets all sweaty, the stickers get loose and he finds something new to pull on!

Trevor had a good day hanging with dad this morning. Then, he had a double aunt-attack. Aunt Heather and Aunt Beth are in town only for the weekend so they had to get in a little Trevor time.
We got excellent BBQ for dinner (thanks Heather!!), and Trevor joined us at the table. He was such a good boy and behaved so well at the table while we all ate.
