Year 3 – Week 44 – Day 1

We are home! 3765.5 miles on the truck later..
We are all exhausted and buried in work to unpack and re-organize. I am very proud of the boys for making the trip such a success. Bill and I will never forget it even though the boys will have no memories of it, just pictures.

Brendan demonstrates how difficult it is to sleep in carseats, but we will all be sleeping hard tonight.

It took less than three minutes to make a giant mess in the playroom. They were so excited to see all their toys.

When I was getting Trevor in his pajamas, he says, “ooh someone got a big new bed”. He went to sleep easily, I hope he sleeps all night!

Year 3 – Week 43 – Day 7

Drive, drive, drive, drive, drive….. it is tough to spend 7 days out of a 15 day vacation on the road. The boys did very well again, this time it was a laptop with a couple episodes of “Bubble Guppies” that kept them entertained.

We are stopped for the night in Grants, NM at another KOA campground. 336 miles to go until we get home tomorrow.

We stopped in the middle of Texas at a rest stop that was also labeled a “Safety/Rest Stop” because they had a storm shelter there. Encouraging! It was a big place with a nice playground.

One of the things I always found a bit annoying about Texas is how much they love the shape of the state, and make it in to everything.

Brendan is getting to be my fearless little monkey.

343b34

This is the third KOA with a scary playground, this slide might take the cake though.
343t39

I can only imagine this metal beast was picked up in a tornado and bent in half, then straightened out and put back in to use. It was tall and steep and there is no platform on the top at all.
343t40

Brendan would have climbed the ladder if I would have let him.
343b35

The nice part about shorter driving times is stopping while it is still light and being able to make dinner and be done with driving. Brendan got his own plate of spaghetti and he was licking off the noodles!!
343b36

Putting noodles in his mouth is a huge deal!
343b37

Yeah, HUGE DEAL! Yay Brendan!
343b38

We are looking forward to a non-rushed morning and getting home tomorrow afternoon. I can’t believe this trip is almost over!

Year 3 – Week 43 – Day 6

There is nothing glamorous about over-the-road travelling. We are at about the half way point now: Elk City, OK. We are dividing up the miles in to four days of driving instead of three because the near 700 mile days in the car were killer. We did just over 400 today and stopped before dinner. It makes a difference! Tomorrow we shoot for Gallup, NM and then Friday for home.

We found a better stopping place today and took some time to let the boys run around. It was 100 degrees though!! I was hoping that we wouldn’t get to that just yet!
343bt12

Brendan says, “See ya! I am going to McDonalds!”
343b24

He brought back some lunch
343bt13

The boys ate a truck load of fries!
343bt14

343bt15

Trevor is trying to feed fries to Brendan
343bt16

343bt17

Time to go back to the truck again
34307

We settled in at another KOA camp site and Trevor immediately scoped out the best dirt
343bt18

This is the second KOA that has a “vintage” playground. Concrete tunnels..
343b25

Old crooked metal merry-go-rounds
34308

Brendan is signing that his Daddy is going round and round
343b26

Brendan tried a big boy swing
343b27

You don’t find new playgrounds with tall structures made out of rough broken lumber, protruding nails, and rusty poles. How did we ever make it?
343b28

Brendan figured out how to turn on the water
343bt19

Mud time!
343bt20

343bt21

Two dirty boys need a bath!
343bt22

I was proud of Brendan for getting muddy
343b29

Some unique refreshment
343t34

Same old thing every day.. So far Brendan is healthy and we want to keep it that way!
343b30

We have tried to make the most of our travel time and find the fun when possible. We are also thinking about Great-Grandma and Gramma and the difficult choices ahead and wish that we could wrap them in hugs and do something to help.
